You ask what would a good tree with your preferences being; upright growing, single trunk, native to region, conifer that can grow in a wet soil environment? Q: 10-16-10 Tree-Via Question While walking under your trees with an arborist from Hansens Tree you notice leaf debris is building up on the ground. You mention in the past simply using a blower to move and pile the fallen foliage into shade garden areas. He mentions this idea is probably not the best first of all un-composted foliage can harboring overwintering insects (all stages of life) secondly a disease incubator could be created rotting bark. Q: 10-09-10 Tree-Via Question While walking around your landscape as an arborist from Hansens Tree is inspecting your trees for potential problems and if it would be necessary to have some tree pruning done this year. He asks when was the last time your trees were deep root feed. This process using an electric drill and earth auger bit to drill 1' deep holes equally spaced starting 1/3 distance from trunk and continuing out to just beyond drip line, because majority of feeder roots are located in this area. Holes are backfilled using compost, providing an organic soil amendment which will keep trees healthy and vibrant. There is a secondary positive aspect to deep root feeding as well, what is it? Answer As holes are drilled soil compaction is reduced allowing for easier exchange of water and air both are also necessary for healthy soil equally healthy tree.


Q: 10-02-10 Tree-Via Question During your scheduled appointment with an arborist from Hansen's Tree Service for the purpose of inspecting 3 recently balled in burlap trees which are not planted yet. He shows you several branches on each tree that should be pruned ranging from crossing, to broken and twisted. Tree root balls are watered and sitting adjacent to planting holes which are proper width and depth so helps you drop a tree in and unpin the burlap and fold it down to bottom of the hole exposing ends of several roots. You notice there are several roots showing that have frayed ends that occurred when trees were being dug at the production nursery. The arborist says those frayed root tips ends should be pruned, you ask why?

Q: 8-28-10 Tree-via There are several trees that have webbing filled with caterpillars at the fork of lower branches and you know that in spring this is caused by Eastern tent capterpillars.You comment that you didn't think Eastern tent caterpillars were a late summer pest. Hansens arborist says your are right that Eastern tent caterpillars are problematic in spring and late summer early fall it is a different type of caterpillar. What name did the arborist give this fall web producing caterpillar?
