Tis the Season for Mulch

Posted by jweb under Mulching

Now that spring has (finally!) arrived, it is time to find the right mulch to really make your garden pop. Get your newly blooming plants and flowers the nutrients they need to grow up strong, healthy and lush.  Hansen’s Tree Service can help you pick the right mulch for the best looking yard on the block.

We all know that St. Louis summers can be brutal. If your garden is in an area that gets a lot of sun and you choose to go with dark bark mulch, be sure you are planting flowers that thrive in high heat.  This kind of mulch will raise the temperature of the soil, sometimes by as much as 10 degrees.  Therefore, you want to make sure you aren’t going to kill your plants before they even begin growing.

If you are going to be mulching in an area that gets a lot of food traffic, it is likely best not to use rock mulch.  It tends to get kicked around all over the yard, which can make mowing the lawn a treacherous activity.  Only use rock mulch where it can sit undisturbed.

Hansen’s Tree Service offers three different types of organic mulch that will be perfect for whatever needs you may have.  Our Double Ground Organic Mulch and Triple Ground Organic Mulch are made from the finest organic products and offer the perfect size for your yard.  Our Playground Mulch also provides the perfect soft cover to prevent injuries for your child’s jungle gym.

We also offer several color options to guarantee that you will get the perfect mulch to enhance the aesthetics of your yard.  Our lawn care experts will discuss the exact amount of mulch you may need, the right color, and the right type.

Call your St. Louis mulch experts today to discuss which option is best for you!

Spring is just around the corner, and before the warm weather hits you might want to consider investing in St. Louis lawn care service from Hansens.

We understand that lawn maintenance is a tough job and there’s a lot more to it than you may think. In addition to regular lawn mowing, seeding and weed control Hansen’s offers:

-Organic Compost, Top Dress & Aeration: Compost can enrich poor soil and promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms. It can also save you money by reducing the need for pesticides and fertilizers. Top dressing fulfills the majority of your annual fertilizing needs with one application, and aeration provides better water and nutrient absorption by allowing the lawn to breathe.

-Mulch Application: Mulch not only brightens up a yard, but can also act as a pest repellant while offering temperature stability and blocking the growth of unattractive and damaging weeds. Hansen’s offers a complete line of organic mulch in a variety of colors that will dress up any lawn.

-Lawn Pest & Disease Management: Caring for your yard is hard enough without destructive lawn pests and disease lurking around every corner. You may not know what symptoms to look for, but we do. Brown and yellow spots could be snow mold; dead patches in early spring could mean grubs. Let the professionals at Hansen’s take back control of your lawn.

-Shrub Maintenance and Fertilization: There’s more to maintaining your shrubs than a trim here and a water there. Shrubs require deep root fertilization to get the nutritional support they need. Proper pruning will not only encourage flower development, but also promote plant health by removing dead or dying branches.

Winter storms can cause trees to collapse. The weight of ice and snow may be too much for an old tree to handle, and it is suddenly lying on its side. When this happens, you may find that your yard has an unsightly stump remaining, ruining the aesthetics of an otherwise pristine garden. If this happens, the St. Louis stump removal experts at Hansen’s Tree Service are just the people for the job.

These unattractive stumps can make it difficult to plant new flowers in the yard. When the roots are not removed with the tree, they do not allow for new flowers or trees to be planted in that space. If you want to plant a new tree where the old one fell, it is vital to have the old stump removed.

Tree stumps can be an unsightly feature for any yard, but they also can have serious safety concerns. Sinkholes can also form under these broken stumps. Therefore it is imperative for the safety of your home as well as your physical safety to have the stumps removed as soon as possible. Furthermore, any time that a stump is left alone, there is a chance that a new tree will sprout from the stump cut essentially defeating the purpose of removing the tree in the first place.

If you have an unwanted tree stump in your yard, now is the time to get it removed. By the time the roots have completely died and the grass started to grow back, it will be springtime! This will allow you to plant your garden or fix up your yard exactly how you want it without having to work around a big dead spot. Call the St. Louis stump removal team at Hansen’s Tree Service today to get your yard ready for spring!

It may be cold outside, but it is not too early to start envisioning those spring improvements to the yard. Vital to any quality yard or garden is a solid foundation of mulch. Especially now, in the winter months, a good foundation of mulch can help bring those flowers out of the ground a bit quicker when spring does finally roll around.

Mother Nature often lays her own winter mulch with a blanket of leaves and pine needles, but those can be cleared or blown away. When that happens, ground can lay exposed to the harsh winter elements. That’s when you should call Hansen’s, your St. Louis mulch provider, to get your ground ready for the spring. Our quality, organic mulch will give those roots the warmth and nutrients they need to keep them healthy throughout the season.

Laying a nice blanket of mulch on the ground helps keep it warm, allowing your plants and their roots to stay closer to the surface. The closer they can stay to the surface, the sooner they can bloom. Imagine being the envy of the block when your yard is luscious and green while the neighbors’ lawns are still brown and bare! Some solid yard-work and the help of a St. Louis mulching company can have your yard in full bloom sooner than you think!

Whatever type of landscaping you need done, Hansen’s Tree Service is here to help.  Whether it’s tree removal or trimming, lawn services, or mulch in the St. Louis or St. Charles area, Hansen’s Tree Service will leave your yard looking clean, trim, and professional.  Call today and find out how our landscapers can bring out the best in your yard!

Winter is upon us St. Louis! Are you prepared for the snow and ice that our winters can bring? Let Hansen’s Certified Arborists take a look at your trees. We can determine if there are any weakened or decaying limbs that need to be removed before ice damage threatens your home.

Trees covered in snow and ice become heavy and very brittle. This makes the amount of wind necessary to break the branches in your yard or over your house significantly less than any other time of the year. Take action so now that you don’t have an insurance claim later.

Your lawn may be one of the last things on your mind during the winter. But here at Hansen’s, we know that winter lawn care is crucial. There are some considerations that should be made in the colder months to ensure your lawn comes back green and luscious in the spring:

  • Make sure your winter tools such as shovels, ice chippers and snow blowers are handy.
  • Remove all toys, debris and furniture from the lawn.
  • Winterize your lawn mower by storing it somewhere dry, and protect it with a tarp.

Since the St. Louis and St. Charles areas are known to have some fairly harsh winters, you may also encounter some weather issues.

Ice cover- after a snow, sometimes there will be a period of warmth. When this is followed by colder, freezing temperatures, a sheet of ice can form on the lawn.  If this lasts more than a month, your lawn can be damaged or even killed. In this case, you’ll need to repair the bare patch in the spring.

Snow mold- when snow lingers on the lawn, the soil can become insulated and “snow mold” can form. Snow mold can be gray or pink and often leads to leaf tissue damage or other serious injury. It appears in circular patches that can be anywhere from 3 to 12 inches.

You can prevent snow mold by:

  •    raking up all the fall leaves
  •    avoiding nitrogen fertilizers
  •    continue to mow your lawn until it stops growing

If you encounter snow mold, rest assured that once the area has thoroughly dried, most often the lawn will regenerate. You can lightly rake the area to promote this drying process.

Hansen’s Tree Service offers a wide variety of lawn care services in the St. Louis and St. Charles area including lawn mowing, compost and mulch application and pest management. Contact us today for more information.

Compost 101

Posted by jweb under Composting

Hansen’s Tree Service offers quality compost and composting services in the greater St. Louis area.

What is composting?

Composting is the natural decomposing of dead plant matter into plant nutrients.. We can assist the process by adding food scraps, dead leaves and other compostable material. This is not only good for our lawns and gardens, but also for the environment by saving landfill space and reducing methane.

Compost provides balanced, consistent soil improvement instead of the ‘spike’ effect that fertilizer gives. Compost contains a hearty assortment of valuable organisms that will release naturally over time, improving water retention and growing healthy plant tissue.

Benefits of Hansen’s organic compost:

  • Offers balanced levels of nitrogen and other nutrients
  • Contains lower salt levels that won’t burn plants like fertilizer
  • Increases water conservation that promotes healthy root growth
  • Prevents weeds and disease with beneficial bacteria

A common alternative to compost is fertilizer. Fertilizers are soaked with chemicals that only give the illusion of healthy, vibrant plants. Exponentially increasing the amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium will damage your plants and your soil in the long run. When plants grow too fast they become weak and vulnerable to infestation and disease.

Hansen’s offers three types of organically blended compost. Our “Super Soil” Topsoil is a blend of soil and organic compost that increases the biological benefits to plants. Our Bio-Retention Soil adds sand into the mix to not only provide nutrients but also promote water drainage. Lastly, our Magic Bean Organic Compost contains a mixture of decomposed organic matter with holds water and increases plant growth.

All of our organic compost is made to improve soil characteristics, from chemical to physical. It is filled with high levels of nutrients, helping to prevent erosion and control weeds.

In addition to St. Louis composting services, Hansen’s also offers top dress and aeration. Contact us today for more information.
