January is in the middle of the dormant season for many trees and for some, it is the best time to plant.

You can plant deciduous trees this time of year when they are dormant. These are the trees that change their color in the fall and drop their leaves. Here are four tips for planting trees in the winter:
Plan Before You Plant
Before you begin planting trees on your property, you must plan the site where you plan on planting trees. Planning is essential in that the right location will provide your trees with everything they need, like sun, nutrients, and shade.
For example, if you are planting near a sidewalk, be sure that it is a tree that is small enough not to damage the path, and tolerant of salt when the pavement is treated.
The type of soil you have will also determine what trees you can plant. For best results, it’s best to plant a tree with the same soil that you removed from the planting hole.
Plant Native Missouri Trees
When possible, plant native Missouri trees such as flowering dogwood. Native trees are specially adapted to their area and ecosystem, providing many benefits such as:
- Cleaner air
- Reduced temperatures,
- Wildlife habitat
- Water conservation
Do not plant invasive species such as Bradford Pears! While beautiful, these trees smell terrible, are prone to breakage, and choke out native species.
Watch For Transplant Shock
Newly planted trees are at risk for transplant shock, no matter the time of the year. Transplant shock occurs when the tree experiences stress after being moved into a new area. Symptoms include:
- Wilting
- Scorching
- Leaf rolling
- Browning leaves
Water Regularly
To help prevent transplant shock and keep your newly planted tree healthy in the winter, you will need to water regularly. Watering is vital in the winter, especially if the season has been dry and salt has been used in the area.
Watering will also help prevent transplant shock in your newly planted trees.
Remember To Mulch Correctly
Always apply mulch around the base of your tree. Mulch provides a myriad of benefits such as:
- Root insulation
- Water management
- Weed prevention
- Improved soil
Use the right techniques and avoiding common mistakes like mulch volcanos that can cause root rot, moisture and air barriers, and heat.
